Título
POOR SLEEP QUALITY ASSOCIATED WITH WORST FOOD QUALITY IN TEACHERS
Introdução
Sleep is an essential biological activity for the proper functioning of the organism. Poor sleep quality in professionals who face an excessive workload, such as teachers, can affect several dimensions of quality of life, including eating behavior.
Objetivo
To evaluate the association between sleep quality and variables related to eating behavior in teachers.
Métodos
This is a cohort study with elementary school teachers from Londrina (Brazil) in 2012-2013 (baseline) and follow-up 2-year later. The association between poor sleep quality, obtained through Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and self-perception of dietary quality (SDQ; 0-10 grade), frequency of consumption of fruits and vegetables and frequency of replacement of meals for snacks (3-point likert scale), was assessed using generalized estimating equations adjusted for confounding factors (age, sex, body mass index, free time physical activity, smoking and coffee consumption), in SPSS, to obtain beta coefficient (β) and 95% confidence interval (CI). All variables were collected at both times for the analysis.
Resultados
The sample consisted of 530 teachers, 66.6% female, mean age 41.9 ± 9.9 years at baseline. In the baseline, the SDQ mean was 6.5 ± 1.7 points, with 49.1% of the poor quality of sleep, similar to the values found after 2.1 years of follow-up, with 6.9 ± 1.5 points for SDQ, and 50.0% with poor sleep quality. Poor sleep quality was associated with worse SDQ (β -.55 CI: -.80, -.31; p<.001), lower frequency of consumption of fruit (β -.33; CI: -.50, -.16; p<.001) and vegetables (β -.19; CI: -.34, -.05; p=.008) and higher frequency of meal replacement for a snack (β .33; CI: .12, .54; p=.002).
Conclusões
After 2 years of follow-up, independent of confounding factors, poor sleep quality was associated with worsening SDQ and eating behavior not recommended in teachers.
