Título
THE EFFECTIVENESS OF A LIFESTYLE MODIFICATION PROGRAM ON THE OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA AND SLEEP QUALITY: A PILOT CONTROLLED STUDY
Introdução
Physical exercises considered an alternative, complementary treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
Objetivo
To evaluate the efficacy of a 10-week exercise-training program in reducing the severity of OSA and improving sleep quality
Métodos
The impact of an existing supervised-exercise protocol on patients with OSA was investigated in a prospective study with a selected sample of 10 sedentary and overweight/obese adults subjects older than 35 yrs (52 ± 10.3 yrs, 60% men) with OSA (AHI ≥ 5 at screening). After a baseline assessment, the participants were submitted to a 10-week program of combined exercise training . The combined exercise protocol was composed by daily sessions (90 min), 3-5x/wk, including warm up/stretching (10min), 30 min walking (60%-70% FC max), 40min strength in academy (3x 8-12 rep, 60%-70% 1RM) and stretching and cool down (10min). OSA severity was assessed with one night of laboratory polysomnography (PSG) before and following the 10-week intervention. Anthropometry, 6-minute walk test, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Excessive Daytime Sleepiness (Epworth ESS) and Quality of life standard (Sf-36) were also searched.Statistical comparisons between baseline and after-intervention data were made for (p=0.05).
Resultados
Physical conditioning effects were detected in the increased walking steps of 6MWT and in waist circumference reduction. Additionally, there was a Apnea-index reduction 7.3 ± 11.6 vs. 0.9 ± 1.2, improved sleep quality 9.0 ± 3.02 vs. 4.3 ± 2.06; and in the ESS scale 9.0 ± 3.02 vs. 4.3 ± 2.06, ending up with an increase sf-36 423.8 ±164.1 vs. 577.3 ± 105.1. with effective contribution of the improvements in the domains of functional capacity, emotional aspects and vigor-vitality. The observed values of functional capacity correlated negatively with AHI (r=-0,725; p=0,02).
Conclusões
The present protocol improved the expected fitness and body fatness along with reducing the apnea, daylight drowsiness and improved the quality of sleep and life of patients with OSAS.
