Título
Assessment of inflammatory markers in patients with COPD-OSA Overlap Syndrome
Introdução
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), when in association with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), forms the so-called Overlap Syndrome (OS), which is related to worse outcomes when compared to COPD and OSA separately. OS is also associated with elevation of inflammatory phase proteins, such as C-Reactive Protein (CRP) and Interleukin 6 (IL-6), already extensively studied as cardiovascular risk markers.
Objetivo
To compare CRP and IL-6 levels in patients with Overlap Syndrome and COPD alone to evaluate the impact of OSA as marked with a worse prognosis.
Métodos
This is an observational transversal character study of analytical character with comparison of groups. Two groups were evaluated, the first with patients diagnosed with OS and one second only with COPD. We included individuals aged between 40 and 95, diagnosed with COPD, who should be stable and without exacerbation in the last 3 months.
Resultados
We evaluated 99 participants, of whom 49.5% had OS and 50.5% had COPD. There was no statistically significant difference in relation to CRP and IL-6 markers in the groups studied.
Conclusões
In our study, there was no difference in the values of inflammatory markers with the groups evaluated. Further studies with a larger number of patients are needed to elucidate the role of inflammatory markers in Overlap Syndrome.
