CERVICAL CIRCUMFERENCE AND OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA IN AN ELDERLY POPULATION (RENASCER PROJECT) AT THE GAFFRÉE E GUINLE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL (HUGG) IN RIO DE JANEIRO
Introdução
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a commonly disorder found in the general population and its prevalence is higher in the elderly. It is associated with an increased cardiovascular mortality and a worse quality of life (QOL). The Renascer is an Interdisciplinary University Extension Project for Health Promotion and QOL for the Elderly. Cervical Circumference (CC) is considered to be a predictive factor for OSA. The diagnosis of OSA in the elderly is important because its treatment leads to improved QOL.
Objetivo
The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of OSA in a sample of elderly people (patients over 60 years old) from the Renascer Project of the HUGG and to verify its relationship with the CC.
Métodos
This was a cross-sectional study in the elderly patients from the Renascer Project, who were invited to participate regardless of having complaints suggestive of sleep disorders and those who accepted to participate performed a nocturnal polysomnography (PSG) and the CC was measured. An apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) ≥ 15 events/h on PSG was considered for diagnosis of sleep apnea. The Graphpad Prism 9.0 software was used for statistical analysis of data and a p value < 0,05 was considered significant.
Patients data were collected after approval by the local Research Ethics Committee.
Resultados
The sample was comprised of 62 patients. The mean of age was 73,55 (±8,77) years and there was a predominance of females (85,48%). The prevalence of OSA was 45,16% (n=28), consisting of 29,03% moderate OSA (AHI 15-30 events/h) and 16,13% severe OSA (AHI > 30 events/h). There was no significant difference between CC in patients with and without OSA (35,73 (± 3,53)cm and 34,84 (± 3,23)cm, respectively, p = 0,6627).
Conclusões
We found a high prevalence of OSA in elderly people studied, consisting of about 1/3 of these severe OSA. There was no association between CC and OSA in this sample.
