Título
Correlation between Age and Apnea and Hypopnea Indexes of patients treated at Pneumology Service.
Introdução
Multiple studies suggest that sleep apnea and hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) are conditions that increase their incidence as age increases. In recent years, it has gained greater relevance in younger patients, being associated with other pathologies such as cardiovascular diseases, overweight and others.
Objetivo
This research seeks to establish the possible relationship between the Apnea and Hypopnea Index (AHI) and age.
Métodos
Polysomnographic results of 561 patients from Pneumology Service were evaluated for a period of 5 years, of which 421 had an AHI greater than 5, and were stratified by age groups.
Resultados
The greatest number of cases of apnea occurred in the age group of 50-60 years, showing an increase in incidence with increasing age. Out of the 561 patients, 75% were diagnosed with OSAHS (AHI >5), of which 33% (186) had mild apnea, 13% (74) moderate and 29% (161) severe. A significant correlation with disease severity by age group has not been determined.
Conclusões
The work showed results very similar to other studies that report that, with increasing age, the incidence of sleep apnea increases, but this factor did not affect its severity, which may mean that the severity of OSAHS is more related to other factors such as obesity, cardiovascular disease or other comorbidities.
