DENTISTRY IN OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA SYNDROME: CASE REPORT AND SUCCESS
Introdução
Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is defined as a progressive chronic respiratory disorder with systemic repercussions, being characterized by recurrent collapses of the pharyngeal region during sleep or cessation of airflow in the lungs during sleep. The treatment of this syndrome includes conservative or surgical measures with a fundamental role of the dentist.
Objetivo
The objective of this study is to report a clinical case of conservative treatment of a 43-year-old male patient, melanoderma, who presented mouth breathing, daytime sleepiness, snoring by the spouse, morning headache and neck pain as symptoms. aiming at the elimination or reduction of obstructive respiratory events, restoring the normal sleep pattern and adequate arterial oxygenation, normalizing neuropsychic and cardiovascular changes.
Métodos
Through clinical, radiographic and polysomnographic analysis, treatment was started with the use of an intraoral mandibular repositioning device, treatment was monitored using the sleep diary and the result was confirmed by polysomnographic examinations.
Resultados
With the treatment, it was possible to see an improvement in the polysomnographic parameters and in the symptoms reported by the patient. At the beginning of treatment, the patient had 30 episodes of obstructive sleep apnea. After treatment, follow-up and total adherence, the patient had zero apnea episodes, reporting improvement in quality of life, daily tiredness and no snoring by the spouse (including a thank you video). In addition, headaches disappeared and neck pain significantly reduced.
Conclusões
From this case report, the relevance of the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome was observed to improve the negative impact on the patient's quality of life and its impact on other systemic conditions and pathologies. Dentistry plays a fundamental role within this scenario, joining medicine, speech therapy, psychology to return quality of life to patients with this diagnosis. As intraoral devices, especially mandibular repositioners, are safe, predictable and effective options as a therapy for OSAS, when well indicated.
