Título

Relationship between sleep quality index and the physical activity level in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Introdução

Clinical consequences resulting from sleep disorders in individuals with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) may evolve to a progressive reduction in the physical activity level, which are related to higher morbimortality in this population.

Objetivo

To verify if there is a relationship between the quality of sleep index of individuals with COPD and the physical activity level measured by the modified Baecke questionnaire.

Métodos

We evaluated 35 volunteers with COPD who underwent to pulmonary function tests (CPFS/D® [Medgraphic, MGC Diagnostics Corporation, St. Paul, MN, USA]) and home sleep by ApneaLink TM Air® portable equipment (ResMed Corporation, Germany Inc. Fraunhoferstr) for diagnostic confirmation and disease staging and then answered the questionnaires on sleep quality index (PSQI) and physical activity level (modified Baecke).

Resultados

Predominance of the female sex (51.4%), with a mean age of 65 years, with disease staging in the mild (n=9), moderate (n=10) and severe (n=6). There was no direct correlation between the apnea/hypopnea index and the physical activity level, but we found a moderate negative correlation between the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Score PSQI and Baecke questionnaires (p=0.01).

Conclusões

Severity of apnea/hypopnea events of COPD is not related to physical activity level, however, the higher Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Score the lower physical activity level in these patients. Therefore, the application of this questionnaire can be useful in determining the functional limitation of patients with COPD in outpatient clinical practice.
