Métodos

The cross-sectional, man-based study, between May and June 2022 in two cities in Zona da Mata region of Minas Gerais state. The instrument comprised questions about sleep and a specific questionnaire Epworth Sleepiness Scale to measure daytime sleepiness. This question plus Epworth can be helpful in diagnosing sleep disorders.

Resultados

69.8% classified the quality of sleep as good, although 39.6% reported having sleep problems and 7.4% did not know how to respond. Among the main problems presented by the sample, the following were the main ones: snoring (58.5%), waking up during the night (37.7%), waking up feeling tired (35.8%), difficulty falling asleep (26.4%), waking up too early and not being able to go back to sleep (24.5%), nightmares (20.7%), excessive sleepiness (18.9%), obstructive sleep apnea (13.2 %) and grinding or clenching teeth during sleep (13.2%). These problems happened three or more times a week in 47.1%. In this sample, 83% reported no change in sleep during the pandemic, 13.2% that there was a change for the worse, and 3.8% that their sleep changed for the better. In the sample, 39.6% started to use their cell phone more in bed before going to bed during the pandemic. Using a cell phone together with watching television was what most of the sample did before going to sleep 69.8%. Other harmful habits were also reported: thinking about unresolved issues 24.5%, consumption of alcoholic beverages 20.7%, eating heavy meals 18.8% and consumption of caffeine or cigarettes 16.9%. The Epworth sleepiness scale showed that 37.74% of the sample had normal sleep, 22.64% had average sleepiness and 39.62% had abnormal (possibly pathological) sleepiness.

Conclusões

Clarification is needed regarding harmful habits performed before bed and a greater awareness of the population regarding the changes present in sleep since several changes found was seen in people who considered their sleep to be of good quality.
