IMPACT OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC ON SLEEP QUALITY AND BURNOUT PREVALENCE IN MULTIPROFESSIONAL HEALTH RESIDENTS

Introdução

Health residencies aim at professional qualification, however their extensive workload and academic and professional demand, in addition to the challenges of the current situation of the covid-19 pandemic, can lead to physical and mental stress with potential repercussions in quality of life.

Objetivo

To evaluate the sleep quality and Burnout syndrome of multidisciplinary residents comparing periods before and during the covid-19 pandemic.

Métodos

The study was cross-sectional, quantitative in nature and was carried out with multiprofessional residents of a public hospital in northeastern Brazil. Data collection took place in two moments: the first moment was in 2018, when data was collected from 28 residents; the second moment was in 2021, data were collected from 36 residents. A sociodemographic form, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and the Preliminary Burnout Identification Questionnaire were applied.

Resultados

Sixty-four residents participated in the study, most of them female (84.4%), with a mean age of 25.9 ± 2.1 years. Regarding sleep quality, there was an average PSQI of 8.4 ± 3.1, with no difference between the groups before and during the pandemic. There was a high frequency of poor sleep quality among residents both before and during the pandemic with 67.9% vs 80.6%, respectively. A mean ESS score of 10.7 ± 4.1 was observed, with no difference between the groups. Regarding the symptoms o burnout syndrome, comparing residents before and during the pandemic, a frequency of 39.3% vs 52.8% was observed in the initial phase and 46.4% vs 36 in the initial phase of installation, but no significant difference between groups.

Conclusões

Residents presented poor sleep quality and signs of Burnout Syndrome, especially in the initial and installation phase of the disease. No differences were found in sleep quality, sleepiness and burnout symptoms between residents before and during the covid-19 pandemic.
