Título

Dietary practices, physical activity and sleep habits in adults during the COVID-19

Introdução

The COVID-19 pandemic drastically impacted the population's life routine, healthy habits such as physical exercise, food and sleep quality were impacted due to social isolation measures.

Objetivo

To assess the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic to eating habits, physical exercise practices and sleep perceptions.

Métodos

Data were collected from June to August 2020, through an online form containing information on behavior, physical exercise, eating habits and sleep. Descriptive analysis of mean, median and standard deviation were performed for continuous variables and frequency for categorical variables. Chi-square tests were performed for association between qualitative variables and multinomial regression tests for association between variables of interest. The significance level adopted was p<0.05.

Resultados

The study consisted of a sample of 189 individuals with a median age of 31 (IC95%=32.2-35.4) years, 77.8% were female and had an average monthly income of 2-5 minimum wages (20.1%). Regarding health habits during the pandemic, 60.3% reported practicing some type of physical activity, 38.1% reported not having changed their dietary pattern and 35% considered their sleep quality to be very good. Sleep time was 8.30 (IC95%=8.22-8.57) hours during the period of social isolation. Among individuals who considered having more time to take care of their health during the period of social isolation, about 35.2% (x²=6.51; p=0.039) reported having improved their diet during this period and 68.5% (x²=7.08; p=0.008) were practicing physical activity. On the other hand, individuals who reported not having enough time to take care of their health were 3.68 (1.4-9.6; p=0.008) more likely to have a sleep quality considered very bad, in addition, bad mood positively affected the worsening of sleep quality [9.89(2.11-46.3; p=0.004)].

Conclusões

The results of this study emphasize that, despite the negative impacts of social distancing, the fact that individuals spend more time at home positively affected health practices, due to the greater time available to take care of their health.
