Título
The relationship between pro-inflammatory cytokine production and insomnia: a systematic review
Introdução
The sleep is defined as a physiological process that promotes homeostasis of the organism on which there is increase in excitation threshold and decrease in metabolic and imune response to external stimuli. Articles reveal that there is an increase in pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-a and others inflammatory mediators in individuals with insomnia.
Objetivo
A systematic review of the literature was performed in order to evaluate the effects of insomnia on the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in humans.
Métodos
A search was carried out in English and Portuguese, referring to the period from 2012 to 2022, in five databases for the survey of original articles: PubMed, EMBASE, LILACS, MEDLINE and Web of Science, using the descriptors "sleep", "insomnia", "cytokines" and "inflammation". After the first selection, the articles were read in full and those that did not meet the established criteria were excluded from the study. Data recording was performed in Excel®, for relevance tests 1 and 2, with previous reading and removal of duplicates performed in the Zotero® program. To assess risk of bias, the Cochrane risk of bias tool version 5.1.0 (Cochrane Handbook) was used. A total of 188 articles were found, of which only 07 met the inclusion criteria.
Resultados
In this review, it was found that 62.5% of the selected studies showed a positive association between increased production of inflammatory cytokines in individuals with insomnia.
Conclusões
It is concluded that the data on the relationship between insomnia and the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines tend to present a positive association, however they are inconsistent and need further studies.
