Título

Influence of the sleep-wake cycle at different times of periodization on the performance of disabled and conventional basketball athletes.

Introdução

Sleep is attributed to the recovery of energy spent during the waking period, besides being fundamental in the development and maintenance of metabolic activities of the organism. Some factors may influence sleep patterns, for example, sleep disorders, sleep deprivation, and physical training load / intensity. During a training period for professionals or semi-professionals athletes, the intensity of training increases gradually. Aiming for the preparation for the competitive period, it is possible that the athletes may experience sleep changes or oscillations.

Objetivo

The objective of this study is to analyze the sleep-wake cycle of basketball and wheelchair basketball athletes during two stages of periodization: 1) preseason, 2) competitive.

Métodos

In order to achieve the proposed goals, the athletes will use the actigraph, a non-invasive method that consists in measuring the sleep-wake cycle for 10 days in conjunction with the sleep diary during those periods and also answering the following questionnaires: daytime sleepiness (Epworth), subjective sleep quality (Pittsburgh), chronotype (Horne & Osterberg), pre-competitive media inventory (CSAI-II), and anamnesis. During official team competitions the scout of the matches will also be conducted to analyze the influence of sleep over the athletes performance regarding the fine movement, such as, the percentage of correct pitches, passes and throws and also the distance traveled on court.

Conclusões

Nowadays it is known that according to exercise intensity sleep oscillations may occur, moreover, people with disabilities tend to have a higher incidence of sleep disorders compared to people without disabilities. In that matter we believe that athletes of conventional basketball may present lower sleep oscillations in comparison with the wheelchair athletes. In addition the athletes with the worse sleep quality in general would be the ones with the worse performance during the competition.
