Evaluation of Excessive Sleepiness and Quality of Life in medical students of a private University of Ribeirão Preto

Introdução

Disruption of circadian rhythm structure and sleep deprivation may be related to decreased professional or academic performance, increased incidence of psychiatric disorders, behavioral problems and decreased vigilance. Thus, sleep disorders and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in medical students may be related to impaired quality of life.

Objetivo

Evaluate the prevalence of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in students of different periods of medical school and correlate with the quality of life of these individuals.

Métodos

Students of Medicine of a private university answered questions that addressed individual clinical features, Excessive Daytime sleepiness ( EDS) and factors related to quality of life with SF 36 questionaire. To correlate prevalence of EDS with different variables, the Chi-square test (χ ²) and accurate Chi-square test were carried out. To investigate the relationship of domains of the SF-36 questionnaire with EDS, the Univariate analysis of variance (ANOVA) was carried out. Then, the logistic regression multivariate binary.

Resultados

179 students were evaluated, in which the prevalence of EDS was 37.9% and the mean hours of sleep were 6.5 ± 0.95. The students of the first and sixth year present a higher degree of sleepiness than the others, and the female students presented 2.25 times more chance of presenting EDS. In addition, an inverse relationship was demonstrated between domain vitality and EDS.

Conclusões

Students of this medical school present different EDS rates, being higher in the first and sixth year. The frequency is higher in female students. The presence of daytime sleepiness in this group is associated with a change in the quality of life in the vitality-related score.
