Título

Sleep Health at a Southern Brazilian city

Introdução

The importance of sleep have been largely discussed but there is not agreement of which aspects are the most important, many usually sleep studies assess the sleepinesses scale (Epworth) or sleep quality without recently it was proposed a self-reported scale including five positive dimensions of sleep/wakefulness–Satisfaction, Alertness, Timing, Efficiency and Duration (SATED) adressing the sleep health and the possible health outcomes.

Objetivo

To estimate the prevalence of healthy sleep in the passer-by population of a country city through the SATED scale.

Métodos

During the sleep awareness day we conduced a cross-sectional survey which intend to evaluate the sleep health in a country city using a 5-dimension sleep scale (SATED). The population selection was a consecutive inclusion of the passion population interviewed by the medical students, were excluded participants with age under 18 years. Logistic regression models adjusted by age, gender, education level and BMI.

Resultados

524 participants are interviewed, being (293 female and 231 males), with average age of 47 (SD +/- 16,01), BMI range from 17 to 58, average 26 (SD +/- 4,99). Considerign the educational level 33% of the sample had less than 9 years of education, 35% between 9 and 12, and 30% more than 12 years of education. The average SATED score was 6,15 (SD +/- 2.55, range 0-10), splitting the score in clinical groups 36% moderate or good sleep health (SATED 8-10); 74% poor sleep health. The linear regression model had not shown that age, weight and BMI as predictor variable of the SATED. The comparison between health sleep vs. unhealthier sleep shown intergroup diferences just in age (p=0.01) and BMI (p=0.01).

Conclusões

The new scale,SATED has shonw to be an easy tool to aplied by interview. In these population composed by 524 interviewees, it is perceived that more than a half could have general health problems related with the poor sleep healt founded in 74%. The age and BMI are the significant diferences between the healthy and unhealthy sleepeers.
